LAHORE -- South Asia region represents eight countries- Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives- which are members of South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC). Most of the people in these countries share a common cultural and political heritage. It was this recognition at the political level which led to the establishment of SAARC when its Charter was adopted on December 8, 1985. The countries in this region are developing nations with limited resources especially in health sector. Mental Health in particular, is not a priority area in many of these countries. Limited number of professionals, escalating health care costs and cost of drugs in addition to non availability of mental health policies are some of the major obstacle in this region.
